What is the recommended daily amount?

There is no universal suggested dose; nonetheless, kombucha, like all things in the diet, should be used in moderation. Our recommendation is 250 to 350ml each day.

Can we drink every day?

Yes, they are both great drinks to have on your daily diet.

How should I drink The GUTSy Captain Kombucha and Water Kefir?

We recommend drinking it cold. Never shake. After opening keep refrigerated and consume it within 3 days.

Are they suitable during pregnancy? Please explain

Yes, they are considered safe during pregnancy. Nonetheless, always consult with your attending doctor before consuming it, explain if you already used to drink or are now introducing, and follow the healthcare professional how to adapt to the pregnancy.

Are they suitable while breastfeeding?

Yes, a lot of studies have shown that since probiotics are not absorbed into the blood they are unlikely to be transferred into breast milk. However, we encourage that you always ask and follow the directions of the accompanying pediatrician.

Are they suitable for children?

According to the European Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, from the age of 12 months, the child should be integrated into the family diet, reinforcing or adopting good eating habits, and it should be considered whether there is a family history of allergy. Thus, kombucha can be included in the child's diet, but we recommend always consulting with the doctors who is accompanying it and following his advice.

Can I combine Kombucha with other foods or supplements containing probiotics?

Yes, there is no evidence advising against that, but they have a lot of live bacteria and, therefore, we must have a balance. If you are taking a probiotics supplement, bare in mind that you should drink only up to 350ml of kefir and kombucha. If you want to eat fermented foods besides those, reduce the amount you drink to 200ml a day, for example.

Is GUTsy Captain Kombucha concentrated?

No. we produce everything from scratch and grow our own SCOBYs - both for The GUTsy Captain Kombucha and for The GUTsy Captain Kombucha Zero. We only use high quality, 100% natural ingredients, with no artificial colours and flavours, organic, vegan and gluten free.

What's "SCOBY"?

A SCOBY, which stands for “symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast,” is an ingredient used in the fermentation and production of kombucha.

Does the Kombucha contain alcohol? If so, how much? If not, how come?

All kombucha contains a small amount of alcohol that is created during the fermentation process, but usually it’s not enough for a person to feel its effects.
The GUTsy Captain Kombucha and GUTsy Captain Kombucha Zero contain less than 0.5% alcohol by volume and are sold as non-alcoholic beverages. For your reference, it contains similar levels of alcohol as an over-ripe banana, a fresh orange juice, or two slices of brown bread. A beer typically contains around 5% alcohol, and a 5-ounce glass of wine has around 12% alcohol. Kombucha is considered a non-alcoholic drink.

Does GUTsy Captain Water Kefir contain any alcohol?

No. We have formulated our kefir to not contain any alcohol and is safe for the whole family. Only trace amounts of less than or equal to 0.1% ABV is present. It is classified as a non-alcoholic beverage.

What are probiotics and how do they work? Are probiotics healthy?

Probiotics are bacteria naturally present in the human body, especially in the gut. Basically they create communities in gut walls, reproduce themselves and function as a barrier for bad bacteria, toxins and other strange particles that enter the body. They also help produce a lot of substances that help bowel movements, digest fibres, produce short chain fatty acids, help produce hormones, and protect our immune system. Therefore, they are indeed very healthy for us.

What is the difference between Probiotics and prebiotics?

Probiotics are live bacteria and prebiotics are fibres or dead bacteria that serve as food for probiotics.

What is the connection between probiotics and Gut health?

Probiotics are colonies of bacteria that live all over the gut walls and protect them from toxins and other bad bacteria. They contribute to the digestion of fibre, help bowel movements and produce a lot of much needed hormones.

What is the connection between Gut health and overall wellbeing?

The gut is considered a second brain because we produce lots of hormones, including serotonin and melatonin (the hormones of happiness and sleepiness) in the gut. It is the organ that decides what is absorbed to the blood and what it depletes from the body. Basically it can control a lot of physiological processes that are fundamental for our energy, immune function, humour, weight management, sleep and so on.

What is the connection between Gut Health and mental health?

The gut is considered a second brain because we produce lots of hormones, including serotonin and melatonin (the hormones of happiness and sleepiness) in the gut. Furthermore gut bacteria produces a lot of short chain fatty acids, that play an important role in synaptic transmission, memory and concentration.

Is there any evidence of the benefits of Gut health in Humans?

Yes, there are countless studies on the subject, including books for the general public that talk about it. According to our Nutricionist, a good example is "Gut : the inside story of our body's most under-rated organ", by Giulia Enders.

Why is Gut considered the "new Heart"?

Because it is the second most emotional organ in the body. It has a nervous system of its own, which affects bowel movements, gas production and water retention according to the feelings that we have. That is also the reason why there is a disease called Irritable bowel syndrome.

Do they help digestion?

Yes, they are a natural source of gut bacteria, which helps with bowel movements and production of digestive substances.

Do they help weight-loss?

Gut bacteria helps maintain gut cell integrity and improves all the digestive processes. Therefore, it helps absorb less toxins and fat, which is important for maintaining a healthy weight. Besides, it helps controlling our satiety hormone production, which contributes to less compulsive and emotional eating episodes.

Are they good for the skin?

The skin is the biggest organ in the human body, and it is intimately connected to diet and intestinal health. A healthy gut enables for proper nutrient absorption from the food, resulting in better skin.

Are they diuretics?

We can say that they help the body absorb less toxins and retain less water. So, in a sense, we can consider them diuretics. But, they don't deplete minerals like diuretics usually do. Besides, they are a good source of water which is important to keep the body hydrated and the kidneys well functioning.

Do they contribute to an improved metabolism?

Yes, gut bacteria protects the body from toxins and bad bacteria that causes inflammation and slows down our metabolism.

Do they contribute to a stronger immune system?

Absolutely! About 70% of our immune system cells are concentrated around the gut walls and their only protection is, in fact, gut bacteria. We can imagine them as little soldiers protecting our china wall :)

Do they help you poop?

Yes. The gut has billions of probiotic bacteria living in it. If they are a strong community, bowel movements are great and you can poop at least once a day. But, if we have uninvited neighbours, taking homes from our probiotics, bowel movements turn out irregular. They can be super slow or, on the contrary, react really fast to foods, cause you cramps, gases and dilated stomach.

Do they help with your mood?

Yes, in fact, a large quantity of hormones are produced in the gut, including serotonin and melatonin, the so called hormones of happiness and sleepiness, super important for our mood. But, we need a healthy gut for that, which means, we need a lot of good probiotic bacteria in our life.

Do they boost your energy?

Yes, Kombucha and kefir are a natural source of iron and vitamin B12 due to the fermentation process which is very important for our energy levels.

Are there any side effects ?

In healthy individuals, there are no known side effects from consuming kombucha. If you have a medical condition, consult the doctor before consuming kombucha.

How do we make a Zero Sugar Kombucha with a great taste?

We know taste is a key driver, when deciding to drink or eat something. But also, that there is a growing consumer concern about sugar levels. So, we decided to develop a recipe that respects the authentic process of brewing a kombucha, with all its benefits, but having as a result a sparkling and delicious Kombucha with zero sugar. It took us more than one year of trial and error, but we got there. Resuming, we developed a longer fermentation process where at the end there is no sugar left. The details are our secret.

How do Probiotics / good bacteria stay alive if there is no sugar left in the GUTsy Captain Kombucha zero?

The kombucha bacteria do not need sugar to survive.

How do you have a Kombucha with zero Calories?

GUTsy Captain Kombucha Zero is a Kombucha with zero sugar and the recipe has also zero calories because all the sugar is consumed during fermentation.

What do you mean when you write "Authentic" on the bottle?

This means that in our fermentation process tea ferments with SCOBY. We do not use any type of concentrate, additive or preservative in the production of our kombucha.
We produce our Kombucha in the same way as the original Chinese recipe.

Are your bottles recyclable?

Our bottles are 100% recyclable and 100% BPA free.
Our Kombucha and Kombucha zero 400ml bottles also have 30% rPET.
Our target is to have 100% rPET in all our PET bottles until the end of 2022.
It is a big concern of ours to improve our environmental footprint. Balancing the best way to deliver our products with quality and safety. Example of that is that we’ve launched cans and we are working on a glass option.
